Hymn of the Holy One: A Biblical Guide to the Lyrics

This hymn is more than poetry—it is a declaration of Scripture. Use this guide to deepen your understanding of the words we sing.

Verse 1: The Throne Room of Heaven

“Before Your throne, the angels bow, Holy and worthy, eternal now. Jesus, Redeemer, the Lamb who was slain, Forever You reign, forever the same.”

Biblical Foundation:

  • Angels bowing: “Above him stood the seraphim… And they were calling to one another: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty’” (Isaiah 6:2-3)
  • The Lamb who was slain: “Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the throne” (Revelation 5:6)
  • Forever the same: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8)

“The heavens resound with the songs of old, Your glory proclaimed in whispers and bold. From mountains to seas, creation cries, Holy is Jesus, the King who never dies.”

Biblical Foundation:

  • Creation cries out: “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands” (Psalm 19:1)
  • All creation worships: “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord” (Psalm 150:6)

Chorus: The Ancient of Days

“Holy, Holy, Lord Most High, Crowned with glory, lifted to the sky. We lift our voices, Your name we praise, Singing the hymn of the Ancient of Days.”

Biblical Foundation:

  • Holy, holy, holy: “Day and night they never stop saying: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty’” (Revelation 4:8)
  • Ancient of Days: “As I looked, thrones were placed, and the Ancient of Days took his seat” (Daniel 7:9)

Verse 2: The Light That Takes Hold

“In every heart, Your light takes hold, A love eternal, a grace untold. You heal the broken, You calm the waves, Jesus, the Savior, mighty to save.”

Biblical Foundation:

  • Light in our hearts: “For God… made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ” (2 Corinthians 4:6)
  • Mighty to save: “The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves” (Zephaniah 3:17)
  • Calms the waves: “Even the wind and the waves obey him!” (Mark 4:41)

“Your hands have carved the stars above, Your cross has written the song of love. Through every trial, we stand as one, Lifting our hymn to God’s risen Son.”

Biblical Foundation:

  • Creator of the stars: “For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth” (Colossians 1:16)
  • The cross writes love: “God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8)

Bridge: The Victory

“The veil was torn, the grave undone, The victory won by the Holy One. Let every nation and every tongue, Sing of the Savior, the Risen Son.”

Biblical Foundation:

  • Veil torn: “The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom” (Matthew 27:51)
  • Victory over the grave: “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” (1 Corinthians 15:55)
  • Every nation and tongue: “Every creature in heaven and on earth… singing: ‘To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power’” (Revelation 5:13)

Outro: Forever and Ever

“Forever You reign, forever adored, Jesus, our Savior, our risen Lord. Through endless ages, Your praise begun, We sing the hymn of the Holy One.”

Biblical Foundation:

  • Forever reign: “To the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore!” (Jude 1:24-25)
  • Endless ages: “And they will reign for ever and ever” (Revelation 22:5)

A Prayer Before You Sing

Holy One, Ancient of Days, as I sing these words, let them not be empty sounds on my lips. Let them be the cry of my heart. Thank You for the Lamb who was slain, for the veil torn, and for the grave undone. Teach me to worship not only with my voice but with my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

For Reflection This Week:

  1. What does it mean that God is holy? How does His holiness shape your worship?
  2. Why must the conquering Lion also be the slain Lamb?
  3. In what ways can you offer your life as true and proper worship this week (Romans 12:1)?
